About KIN

HOME / ABOUT KIN
KIN provides quality, professional, developmentally appropriate care for children in a secure and inviting setting. We are open year round 7:30 AM until 5:30 PM, and are conveniently located in West Durham.

KIN was founded in 1983 by three women business owners on Ninth Street. KIN is a 501(3)c non profit organization and the official name is Ninth Street KIN Inc.

KIN stands apart from a lot of other programs due to the very low ratios and child centered curriculum. Combining the best elements of early childhood education with quality child care, KIN is designed to meet the needs of both children and their working parents. Our program fosters social, cognitive, physical and emotional development. Through a rich and varied curriculum based on the natural sciences, it stimulates each child’s curiosity about the world. We have a daily routine that includes individual and group experiences, plus indoor and outdoor play. Meal times invite opportunities for great conversation, as well as self-help skills. Each day our children draw on resources and opportunities that include art, language arts, fine and gross motor activities, math and sciences. Our activities are responsive to children’s developmental needs and supportive of cooperative problem solving skills. We offer both teacher-guided activities and ample time for important child-directed play.

KIN parents are an integral and highly visible part of our community. We have an active Parent Job Program; each family is required to participate three hours per quarter. Parent job opportunities include: helping with two of our biggest fundraisers, working at parent/staff workdays, as well as an ongoing list of chores. Parents may also choose to share a specific talent with the children whether it may be a musical instrument, sharing information about their culture or their profession. Two times a year teachers arrange conference time with parents to discuss their child’s progress in all areas of development.

KIN offers varied schedules to help families balance their commitments to family as well as workplace.  We will try to be flexible with your scheduling needs, please contact the Director to discuss any variation that you might require.

All applications are accepted on a first come- first serve basis, with the exception that siblings of children who are currently enrolled are given priority. KIN admits students of any race, color, identity, national and ethnic origin. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational and admission policies.
